Years ago, a group of locals with love for all pets gathered to define and address the needs of the community and to create a bridge with the budget-restricted services of the Animal Control Officer.
In 1994, we crafted a list of goals that citizens and members of the newly formed group - SOS Pets - could perform through advocay and fundraising. Our goals now are not much different than when we first began.
We support the Seward Animal Shelter with donations of food, materials and money; we offer reduced cost spay/neuter vouchers to the community; we advocate for a new animal shelter; provide pet food to the local food bank; and provide vaccine and microchip clinics.
Over the years the efforts of SOS Pets has waxed and waned. But throughout, our overiding motivation has been to maximaize the quality of life of local pets.
One aspect of this program funds surgeries for animals that pass through the Seward Animal Shelter. The second aspect donates $50 vouchers to any community member to be redeemed at several South Central vet locations.
Microchipping your pet greatly increases the chances of your lost pet returning home. SOS Pets offers low cost microchipping to any interested pet owner.
Seward’s Alice Pickett Animal Shelter welcomes and adopts out hundreds of local pets each year. Typically, the shelter sees more cats than dogs. SOS Pets facilitates donations and shelter supplies as needed.
Twice a month we purchase and distribute pet food to the He Will Provide food bank in support of local families in need.
Save Our Seward Pets promotes responsible cat & dog care through education. Visit our Education page to learn or view our calendar to see upcoming events.
A new animal shelter remains a high priority for SOS Pets. A clean, safe, quiet, low-stress environment will encourage adoption and decrease disease; provide comfort, health, enrichment and hope for pets; be enjoyable for caregivers; attract local and visitor volunteers; promote community hope and pride and help rehabilitate animals.
